January always feels incredibly slow and strangely fast at the same time. When it comes to an end I always find myself grateful for a new start and ready to extend into the year. Something about February always makes me giddy between the gorgeous flowers, idea of Valentines (good and true paper ones are my favorites), and a new spark of joy in the air!
Some of my February Favorites thus far are:
Sausage, Kale, and White Bean Soup
This soup is hearty, yet a light and delightful treat for some of those chilly February days. It is SO easy and delicious. I personally think it is even better the second day so definitely worth making a batch in advance for lunches or dinners.
If you didn’t know this about me - I love soup! I would like to attribute this to the Soup Group I was in my second year of teaching. Each Monday we would rotate bringing in soup, a side and a sweet treat for everyone. I always treasured my mom’s famous chicken and vegetable soup, but this allowed me to expand on my soup horizon. Now it is one of my favorite things to eat and I love trying and experimenting with new recipes! Sadly, Jordan does not love soup as much as I do, but he gave this one a thumbs up so that is a real win. I hope you enjoy too!
Books and my New favorite podcast!
My darling and dear childhood friend, Katherine Kirk, started a podcast about books with her cousin. I have always admired Katherine’s love of the written word and what a voracious reader she is. Now, I am absolutely giddy that she is sharing her reading recommendations and book thoughts with the world. I highly encourage you to tune into Bookfare and enjoy reading alongside her and Ashley! It is an absolute delight.
Speaking of books! Some that I have devoured lately:
Remarkably Bright Creatures
I was skeptical about this book as I was not sure the plot resonated with my book interests. However, I am SO glad I picked this up! I cared deeply for the characters and adored them for their unique quirkiness. I found myself intrigued by the octopus species and the intelligence of so many creatures around us. I had heart strings tugged and pulled and continuously found myself inspired by characters, their defining experiences and how their stories were woven together. Definitely add this to your list of things to read!
The Collected Regrets of Clover
This was one was slow to get into for me, but then I was hooked and I couldn’t stop reading. I am fascinated with the art of Death Doulas and particularly found myself feeling sympathy and compassion for the beloved main character, Clover. It made me so grateful for the people in my life and the friendships and family I hold near and dear. It is a beautiful reminder of things not to take for granted and that our lives are meant to be lived. That being said, this book opened up something in me. I cried for the final 40+ pages and then couldn't stop for days. I truly believe this author reaches something raw and tender in the reader. I highly recommend, but also on a weekend when you don’t have many things to go to puffy eyed and you have time to fully process all the emotions and feelings this book brings.
Favorite Things Party
This may be the most fun gathering ever! Essentially, a group of friends get together and everyone brings three of a singular item that they love (thus their favorite thing). From there, people present their item and then names are drawn out of a hat for people to select a new favorite thing they want. Everyone leaves with a party favor bag and three “new favorite things to try!” I am obsessed with my new jade roller (morning routine addition) and have been truly adoring my new book, Safe All Along.
I had so much fun and dream of planning one of these at least 4 times a year. Cville community - get ready!
My favorite calligraphy hack is to download Canva and find a calligraphy print template you love! Then you can type in each person or word that you need and it will come out in the lettering you want. It is so easy to copy and such a fun and special touch to add to whatever it is that you are writing.
I am a firm believer that every party is better with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options and some fruit to pop in for fun! Also I love this sign and need to copy it for any and all future hosting! ReformerX Pilates
- thoughts on my first week post instructor training
I love finding and sharing new people and one of those this week is Emily Lex. Multiple friends sent her to me within a 24 hour period because of her beautiful paintings. She specializes in watercolors - and it is so dreamy!
I absolutely love her free downloadable images and have been sending them to people who I think would love them too! I am eyeing some of her gorgeous floral and mug art prints for our home and can’t wait to order some. In the meantime enjoy these beautiful free nuggets!
I hope this week brings you February joy and cozy calm. I hope you take some time to enjoy a good book, cup of tea, or phone call with a friend. I hope something inspires you, pushes you, and excites you. I hope you say yes to good things and no to ones that aren’t soul filling. Most of all, I hope you seek and revel in the simple joys of each day!
Big hugs,
Tate
